Description The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia, is one of the largest comprehensive art museums in the United States. VMFA, which opened in 1936, is a state agency and privately endowed educational institution. Its purpose is to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret art, and to encourage the study of the arts. VMFA’s permanent holdings encompass nearly 40,000 artworks, including the largest public collection of Fabergé outside of Russia, the finest collection of Art Nouveau outside of Paris, and one of the nation’s finest collections of American art.

To Bring You are welcome to bring a sketchpad to sketch while in the museum. Non-colored pencils only, no pens. Sketch pad/writing pad should be no larger than 18 x 24 inches.

Modern Art at the VMFA
Enjoy a guided tour of the galleries at the VMFA with a focus on 20th and 21st century modern art. The tour will pay particular attention to surreal, "weird" and other modern works of art.
Notes: Please arrive at least 10 minutes early. The field trip fee does not including the cost of parking. You may be able to find free parking along the street, but garage parking at the museum is $6 per day (or free for members). Food, drink and backpacks are not permitted in the museum (there is a student coatroom where these can be stored). Packed bag lunches are allowed on Museum grounds. Designated spaces to eat lunch are at the top of the sculpture garden (the Belvedere) or under any of the large trees. VMFA Best Café is open 10 am – 4:30 pm. Menu items are à la carte and range in price from $3.00 - $12.00 (sandwiches, hot dogs, BBQ, soup, salad bar, pizza). Packed bag lunches are not permitted in the Café.
